One of my TEKS refers to moving to no formulaic writing by the end of the tenth grade year. While I believe some writing must follow a bit of formula in order to convey ideas logically, writing is not a process that everyone follows exactly. Once a writer has confidence in his basic skills, the next layer follows. Some of the best papers the AP readers get to read are not only academically sound and grammatically correct, but they have voice and they are entertaining. That is what I want my kids to learn.
